A refined and relaxing modern home, just meters from the sands of Byron Bay

The design of this idyllic home overlooking one of Australia’s best-known beaches allows multiple families to visit, while still having private areas. The building was positioned to maximise the site’s spectacular views in all directions.

The coastal home was carefully zoned over three levels. The top-level includes the main living areas, study and ample entertaining spaces which face both the surf to the northwest and a national park to the southeast.

Materials

With the site just metres from the beach, a simple palette of band sawn Silvertop Ash and zinc were selected to cope with the harsh environment and also patina over time.

The middle level is the main sleeping zone as well as the entry via street level. The lower level accommodates a guest bunk room, secondary entry and living area that leads out to yet another deck overlooking the swimming pool. An internal lift was included to provide easy access to all levels.

The site included integration with existing masonry boundary walls.

These were carefully surveyed, slightly modified and successfully incorporated into the design. Other original stone walls were retained to provide an instant patina to the landscape. Even the existing pool was fully refurbished.

Several challenges were presented as part of this project, including a site that falls seven metres from back to front and an existing design approval that needed to be altered for prefabrication. The additional issue of a large neighbouring building was solved through a series of blade walls to the bedrooms, creating privacy and promoting both natural cooling from sea breezes and direct water views.

There are many factors that can impact the final build price.

These include the location, block conditions, access and local council restrictions. Our team are happy to discuss how we can work with you to create an architecturally designed home.
